What is Tenmile Land? To Chad Johnson, owner and CEO, it’s a summation of his entire life.
As a child, the smells of crude oil and drip gas were part of everyday life. To this day those scents immediately take him back to those long summer days spent riding around with Randy, his father, while he tended wells and operated heavy equipment. Growing up in a family immersed in the oil and gas industry five generations back, this line of work isn’t a job; it’s a way of life. In fact, Chad wasn’t alone on those days spent with Randy, his brother and sister (Tony and Tina), were also frequent “helpers”. Chad, Tony, and Tina are still “helping” each other today, with Tony and Tina both involved in the daily operations at Tenmile Land.
Upon reaching adulthood, Chad knew he wanted to stay true to his roots and pursue his own journey in the oil and gas industry. Ripe with an entrepreneurial spirit, a young Chad and Breeana Johnson decided to start a business of their own. The name derived from the farm they lived on along Tenmile Creek which also served as a childhood “playground” for Chad, his siblings, and cousin Shawna (Current Chief Operating Officer at Tenmile Land).
In 1999, Chad built a small office in a pole building on his farm and that’s when Tenmile Land was officially born.
The familiar saying, “Do what you love and the rest will follow”, has been a mantra for Chad’s life. The business has moved locations five times since its inception and has found its current home at 70 Professional Place in the White Oaks office park off Interstate 79 in Bridgeport, WV.
Although Tenmile Land is in an office park surrounded by big business and corporations, it’s filled with a team of people that are more like an extension of family than employees. Looking forward to coming to work every day is something very important to Chad and the culture of his business. Chad encourages the team to work hard and play harder. If you stop by Tenmile Land, on any given day there may be mid-morning yoga, meditation, or team building exercises going on. Don’t be surprised, this is commonplace, and we’d encourage you to join in.
